Taller de Intercambio // Interchange Workshop took place from November 4-9, 2012 simultaneously in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Culiacán, México. Facilitated by artist Szu-Han Ho and director Rafael Gallegos, the workshop created a collaboration between artists in two very different contexts in order to foster dialogue and to create a cross-border artwork/performance. Szu-Han led the group in Culiacán from Cuadrante Creativo, and Rafael led the group in Albuquerque, drawing artists and performers from UNM and the Albuquerque arts community. The workshop was conducted in Spanish and English.
Participants in each location got to know the conditions of those in the other location by sending a series of questions about their context—the city, the natural environment, their complaints, the difficulties and challenges of being an artist, their survival strategies, etc. The groups responded to questions from the other side in writing, through skype, video, and other media. Each group then composed a performative 'score'—a series of instructions for enactment of an artwork—for the other side. The two sides enacted the scores there were given and exchanged the results in a final presentation taking place Friday, November 9 that was free and open to the public.
Este taller establece un intercambio y diálogo entre participantes de Culiacán en Sinaloa, MX y de Albuquerque en Nuevo Mexico, EEUU. Szu-Han Ho está dirigiendo el taller en Culiacán de Cuadrante Creativo y Rafael Gallegos está dirigiendolo en Albuquerque de Universidad de Nuevo Mexico. En la fase inicial, los y las participantes de cada localidad enviarán al otro grupo sus preguntas sobre su contexto—sobre su ciudad, su entorno, sus quejas, sus dificultades/desafios en ser artistas, sus estrategias para sobrevivir, etc. Hará por lo menos una sesión de skype, en la cual los participantes se conocerán y platicarán. Como parte de este intercambio, puede que los participantes decidan subir imagenes, videos, o cualquier otro material a la gente de la otra ciudad aquí en este sitio.
Entonces cada grupo creará una “partitura” (score)—una serie de instrucciónes para que sus contrapartes la interprete. Es decir, los culiacanenses deseñarán una partitura para los albuquerqueños y viceversa. Veremos ejemplos de partituras de los años sesentas, como las de John Cage, fluxus, Yoko Ono, John Baldessari y otros. Los participantes “compondrán” estas partituras para ser interpretadas o por el grupo del otro lado. Cada grupo interpretará la partitura que se le ha dado, e inventará una manera de documentar el performance—a través de fotografía, video, registro sonoro, dibujo, u otro medio que escoja. Enviarán esta documentación al grupo del otro lado y compartirán en la pagina web del proyecto.
